Rooted to Dalepl's HC then ICS ROM's, now need a little direction to upgrade to JB?

I followed Dalepl's easy instructions and was able to root and flash my Thrive back to HC several years ago. Apps usually now require 4.0 or higher so I recently re-flashed to his ICS ROM to see ifI could start using it again, which does allow me to play a couple of games, but I cannot play Candy Crush at all (it blinks/flashes at me) and Criminal Case crashes a lot (especially while attempting to watch ads to gain more energy). I'd like to attempt to put a Jelly Bean ROM (or other recommendation?) on it now to see if I can at least use those 2 apps and maybe a casino slot game like Double Down or something as the tablet is still in relatively good condition (with an extra battery and case etc) that it would be a shame to abandon it completely! I have been looking at the Team Baked blackbean ROM but am just a bit lost at the moment and am suffering a bit of information overload where I'm now getting a bunch of info all jumbled up inside my already confused (severe AD/HD) head! lol

I have greatly appreciated all the time you all have put into helping users like me so I'm hoping that someone will still be around to point me into the right direction and am definitely willing to donate for the time! Basically what I need is a step by step walk-through (like I used with Dalepl's root and ROMs) to tell me how to get a jelly bean (or any other that will run my apps) version working on my Thrive. Which one doesn't really matter to me as all I'm really going to be using my tablet for is those aforementioned games and occasionally a light table app. Possibly also watching some youtube videos, looking up or displaying recipes in the kitchen and maybe playing music through Spotify or while hooked up to an external USB. I did use it fairly recently to help me see inside my walls (using an old phone as a cam and tablet for display) for a wiring project so I may still do that, but those are the main functions I would appreciate being able to use.

Since updating or 'reflashing' to ICS, I have not been able to update the SU binary thing, no matter how many times I tried or using any of the supposed fixes out there. The signature check says that my signatures match and I supposedly still have root and SuperUser access but any re-try of anything just crashes the SuperUser app. I am not sure if that is where my problems come from, but the tablet mostly functions fine so from what I've read the binary update shouldn't be a big deal. I would say my skill level in doing this sort of thing is a bit above your average user which can be dangerous as I'm not afraid to try things and have no trouble following step by step instructions as long as I'm told exactly what to do, but definitely nowhere near programmer status (so if I don't have clear cut instructions then I don't know what I'm actually doing, hence the danger part!) and a lot of the language has me googling to see what things mean. I have fixed friends' and family computers just by looking up the problems and solutions online and following instructions to replace parts (including a few motherboards) or run certain software to just clean out malware, or fix other problems, or I even did a BIOS chip flash thing once which has all seemed rather simple to me because I had some great instructions to follow, but maybe that is just because I have some extra patience (aka AD/HD hyperfocus) that they didn't? (Now ask me to do anything involving good hand eye coordination and forget it! haha) I'm an avid DIY'er but it takes me forever to do anything because I love to research things to death and have some health issues that make me take things slow, but I'm stubborn and determined and even though it took me over 2 weeks, I even managed to diagnose and make my first ever car repair (which turned out to be a snapped tensioner spring that took out most of the teeth on my timing belt).

And now that I've overshared like I usually do and you are all probably rolling your eyes at me, hopefully I have at least explained what I am wanting to do, what I'm working with and what I need well enough? I am aware that doing any of this can brick my device and I'm willing to accept that risk as I cannot do a whole lot with it now anyway. I also do not have anything on it that I care about saving so I don't really want to do a back up unless it can restore it to a functional state in case something goes wrong and it gets stuck in a boot loop or something. But I'm a bit unclear about needing to do a full wipe and/or restoring to factory first etc. If you need any other info about it, just let me know. I am not sure if I still have CWM on it or not after the ICS flash, but I know I did that before and have seen some issues between that and other ROM's or needing TWRP so a clarification on that would be great too.

Thank you, thank you and thank you again!

Just a note that I did receive your PM, and I had assumed the wiki was still around, that would have been your answer, but it is gone so I'll need to make other arrangements. Work keeps me busy and trying to write it on my phone in a browser likely won't end well, but I'll try to get something for you (and everyone else) to work from soon. I'm off Wednesday, so perhaps then, if you don't mind waiting a bit longer.

Thank you! Yeah that was one of the most confusing issues I ran into when trying to get to the WIKI thing, I was getting an adobe flash updater page instead. However, 'jimfree' posted a link to the stuff he had saved on media fire and there was a thrive.pack3.gapps.zip in there so I was able to get that (thank you Jim!). I also found a youtube video with some instruction for a CM10 build, so I followed that and put the black-bean-6-B7-Shinka and his gapps on a freshly formatted SD card (from my laptop). Then did a factory reset, partition wipe and dalvik wipe, installed black bean and then gapps and followed all your instructed wait times. I was a bit confused by the two options when first setting up the tablet (I was asked to choose between Nova Launcher and Trebuchet) so I picked Nova Launcher (Just once) the first time but when going to get my apps from the playstore, it said they were incompatible with my version so I went back and chose Trebuchet and this time was able to install my apps. Any idea why those are popping up? So far Candy Crush works with no problem but Criminal Case still crashes after viewing ads. Not a big deal I guess but I'm wondering if I missed a wipe step as I'm finding more info (mounts/storage format system?). It definitely works better than it did so that's a definite success! I'm thinking maybe I'll just shut it off and let rest for awhile and hope the tech genius gremlins will fix it in my absence...I swear it's happened with laptops! lol

    Thank you!

Glad you got it figured out. Formatting system will delete the ROM, I would suggest wiping it before flashing the ROM and gapps, otherwise you did the right steps in the right order, good job!

Compatibility with games wise, unfortunately its a custom ROM running on a device never meant to run past 4.0, so some likely have issues. If its only on certain games after ads, you can try adblock, the screen where the ad is may appear but the ad itself likely won't, and may help with that crashing part.

Trebuchet and nova are launchers, the desktop of android, either one will suffice, trebuchet being the default CM launcher, nova being more customizable, there are others in the play store as well. I use trebuchet on older devices, its lighter on the system resources, google now on newer devices.

I might suggest formatting everything, including system, then flashing the ROM and gapps again, and seeing if anything improves.

I did it all again making sure I wiped everything as suggested and started having some issues with nothing in the play store being able to install, so I did it again just in case I somehow forgot to install the gapps zip and things seem to be working fairly well! Criminal Case still doesn't like ads (well who does really?) and I've had to uninstall and reinstall it a couple of times after it crashed even after just watching one ad, but that's not a huge deal. I've been playing Candy Crush and it runs so smoothly it feels like I have a brand new tablet! Other apps so far have been working pretty well and if any of them start to crash (which usually only happens after I've had multiple apps open so I may just need a good cleaner), I just restart the tablet and it seems to solve the problem. It's nice to have a tablet I can use again, so thank you very much for all your hard work in creating these ROMs and everything! It's amazing to have people like you out there and I just want to make sure you know how much I appreciate it! I am one of those people that will use what I have for as long as I possibly can before replacing it (I kept my last laptop going for over 10 years before finally giving up cuz I was getting tired of replacing parts) because I get comfortable with it and don't like being forced to upgrade until I am good and ready. I get creative in fixing things too (earning me the nickname McGalver, haha!). I have also noticed that it does make a difference in giving the tablet time to install or uninstall and rebooting it before using new apps so that's a great bit of advice that I will use from now on (thank you!).

Now I am wondering how many others actually still use their Thrive or if I will be one of the last ones stubbornly hanging onto it! ;-)

No, you're not the only one running orphaned equipment and abandonware.
10 yr old Toshiba laptop running XP - daily use, but little internet since no patches exist
    Thrive 10 - daily use
Thrive 7 - less than daily but frequent
Both Thrives used by grandkids to play Minecraft.
Yup, reboots and both cache wipes do wonders, always.

    Good thread

If I had one it would still be in use for sure. My son loved mine, even had his own little ROM built just for him and what I deemed "safer" for a child to use.

No communication apps, like hangouts, email, anything like that.
    No social media apps.
Adblock to help keep the errant ads away, some are not appropriate for his age, even if its not smut or something fun for us adults.
Uses my google account which requires 2 step authentication, so he can't go to the play store l, even if something redirects him.
    No browsers.
Animations chosen by him (shinka had it, made people nauseas lol)
Basically no access out, so even if he gets WiFi going it won't do anything I can't control anyways.

He currently uses my nexus 7 (grouper) as his, but hijacks my Google Play edition gpad because "its better" so I may need to break down and build him a ROM on that and get something newer for myself lol

I'm glad the thrive is still going out there, a fantastic device killed to soon. Toshiba makes pretty entry level stuff for android tablets now, a mere shadow of the titan Thrives.

I put screen time on my daughter's devices so I can control her time and which apps she can use...but the little hacker is starting to outdo me in finding ways around it! Being able to build a custom ROM must make things so much easier! lol
