I've still got a Linksys WRT54GS with custom firmware.
That puppy can punch through 4 poured plaster/mesh walls.
Added a pair of 5db antennae for extra kick.

    Sadly it's only a/b/g

It was the router, I found an old G router in my storage and I set it up. My new WiFi speeds are :

    Down 13.91 Mbps
    Up 17.04 Mbps

So the conclusion is the newer WNR2000 'N' router is junk!!!
The older WGR614 'G' router works just fine so if you have an 'N' router run a speed test and if you get similar results get an older 'G' router...

    Yup
I love that WiFi on/off button and how easy to setup.

Dan, this is nearly OT in this thread, so you can move it there if you wish, or totally delete.
Having cut my teeth on Hyperwrt in WRT54g, I prefer Tomato to the built in firmware on Asus. I don't recall all details other than setting static IPs was inconvenient and logging stinked.
RT-N16 has the USB ports serving bloatware, and is apparently an excellent router.
RT-N12 is sufficient for me. Shibby Tomato is great. Misses few features RT-N16 has.
Since I'm not sure what you're after, here is few weeks worth of reading material from links I kept

I did need to copy Asus software and install, but no need to run Setup. One part is used in flashing.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out.
Just never associated ASUS with routers.

I've always had pretty good speed with my WIFI setup but was having IP issues recently which killed it. After fixing them I'm getting speeds on my Thrive then my PC. 19.47 Mbps down and 36.12 Mbps up...crazy!

A fellow student and friend got an Asus RT-N56U router.
It is by far the fastest most powerful router I or he has used to date (In its price range). Not too expensive at $100.00. He did have slight glitches with his particular config. but found custom firmware that patched it right up.
