Around here I can walk to a fast food place, office building or hotel that have open networks in less than 10 minutes (gimped hip and all), and I'm in the 'burbs. I guess I'm spoiled....

Yea I'll have to visit a Starbucks our Mac Donalds and send an update. DDAZ said that the Thrive wifi is only 2.4ghz is that a fact?? Reason I ask is bc other then my router I believe im getting to much noise from other WiFi in that's range and moving to the 5.0ghz might help..

So if my issue is to much inference in the 2.4ghz range another router won't fix it lol seems I'm SOL.

Unless there's another channel available that may not be as strong, but has less interference.
Or, maybe, a custom firmware for the router that would give you a signal boost. Maybe a higher gain antenna?

Interesting info toward the bottom of the page...

Still have to eliminate the Thrive as the issue, though...

Thrive 10 cannot use 5 ghz router.
75 Mbps speed refers to the Wifi card's max spec, the LAN speed it'll try to negotiate with the first hop router, not www.
If your router is 54 Mbps in Windows, that's all you'll get locally (my old WRT54G, Netgear 614 are like that) in which case Thrive works locally with 54.

Get WiFi Analyzer application and watch which of your neighbors hop on the same channel as you try to use.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...analyzer&hl=en
Many people use routers which switch channels (horrors) when they feel like it, so what's good now, maybe not good later.

I pay for 5 MBps down and 2 up Verizon optical (FIOS) and on the Thrive routinely get 4.8-4.9 MBps down and 4.2-4.7 up on speedtest.net. Something must have changed on the lines, because up used to hover around 2 and recently bumped itself
You can even get the test here:
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...peedtest&hl=en

A cool el cheapo, < $25, router is Asus RT-N12. Has 2 5db antenas. 5db vs the usual 3db makes a small difference for a house such as mine with plaster walls and wire mesh within. I got two of those routers now running Shibby's Tomato software. The newer Netgears with those fancy antenas inside were the weakest routers I've ever had, tried three, returned all. Few match the quality of the old WRT54g, but these Asus routers actually are tiny bit stronger.

I have a Cisco/Linksys. I tried Netgear once and had nothing but trouble, so I went back to Linksys. Still, others have Netgear that work fine.

And do try WiFi Analyzer to see if your neighbors are using the same channel. Here's what mine looks like:
