If that's the case, your hands are pretty much tied.
Have you contacted Toshiba? They may have a copy available.

Good news everyone, I've been given the go ahead on rooting.

Could you advise me on the most stable/functional rom for this tablet? I don't want to send it back to her with less than great software. I don't care if it's official or anything, just something you'd trust giving to a grandparent.

You actually have less risk of damage from using the root tool and flashing dalepl's ICS than Toshiba's problem-prone ICS.

Here you go, all you need to root and install a much more stable version of ICS.

[Tool] DaleNet Thrive Univeral Easy Flash Tool

[ROM] DaleNet IMM76D.01.000072314 Deodexed Stock Rooted ROM (US ICS 4.0.4)

Flashing ICS automatically wipes everything on the Thrive, so make sure to backup anything that needs it.

Dalepl's Rooted OOM HC is pretty much hands down the most stable (and the best GPS functionality).
His Rooted ICS would be my second choice.
Again, given end use by a non hobbyist, non techie type.

Both are in Dalepl's development area.
You'll also find his Universal Easy Flash Tool there as well - to root and install the custom recovery to allow flashing the ROM.

Be aware that all of this carries some amount of risk, and it's entirely yours. Read, understand and follow all instructions exactly for each process.
It's very difficult, but it IS possible to permanently brick one of these...

I'll also note that not all thrives got the ICS update, my last 2 never did and remained on HC forever. US models in the US. In this case only way is root and update by flashing ICS yourself in the custom recovery the process installs for you.

    benwalburn,

You might want to consider having Pio, or Dale(using teamviewer) and let them guide you through the process.
PM both of them but be patient as both are very busy so it might take a little time.
Just make sure you have downloaded the files to your computer.

Ok, I rooted and flashed the rom just fine. But for some reason, occasionally pressing the my apps button in the play store causes the app to force close. I've tried clearing the data on the play store.

Clear both cache and data, reboot, clear both again.
Also, in CWM, clear cache and dalvik.
Which ROM did you end up with?

I guess I was just too impatient. The play store updated to the newest version and stopped force closing.

I picked the ics rom mentioned above. The screen issue is resolved, but it seems there's another issue with the wrong area of the screen reacting. It looks like she dropped the tablet.

Anyway, the tablet is much better than before. Thanks for the help everyone.
