Thrive as a Standalone GPS in Europe

After a quick search we have decided to buy a Thrive w 32 g.

Question...would the Thrive help us Navigate streets in Rome (albeit with specific Apps???) ???

    Thanks

On my last trip to Europe, Google maps wasn't any help to me...but that was on a Blackberry. It just plain didn't do mapping for Europe and I don't know if that's changed in the last eight months or so. More importantly, though, is that unless you have a global phone with internet connectivity that you can tether from, you'll be up a creek with Google maps anyway. I haven't found a good worldwide GPS map for Android yet, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

What I do, though, is take a handheld GPS that can load custom maps...but that's mainly because when I'm there, I tend to walk a lot more than I drive and I appreciate extreme mobility for navigation. Plus, the ability to load custom maps is sweet because you can have different ones on hand for different purposes...or, if you have a big enough unit, load 'em all up. That's me, though...and like I said, I'll trek 12+ miles on foot to explore a city.

try True offline maps for your Android - unplugged ! | MapDroyd - you can download the Italy/Rome maps and see if they will work (this is a free offline map/gps app)
Is your iPad battery low? Here, just plug it into my Thrive...

I found the biggest problem to GPS-ing in European towns, particularly the old sections, was the narrow-ness and windy-ness of the streets. While driving the countryside there was virtually no problem with reception....just the current status of the online maps (Autoroute). In the towns, however, the narrow streets and tall buildings reduced the gps's access to the satellites, causing lots of confusion and recalculations. This was using a Garmin Nuvi by the way. I think we would still be there wandering back roads if it hadn't been for the Nuvi!!
