External Microphone through headphone jack?

I'm assuming it can take an iPhone/Blackberry style 4 conductor headset. Could someone confirm this? The user manual says it is a combination, but there is no "using an external microphone or line-in" section.

SOLVED - the Sound Recorder app for some reason only uses the thrive builtin mic. Skype and some other things work with the external mic - the standard iPhone/Blackberry 4 conductor connection.

Not much going on inside the headphone jack to support that feature I'm afraid. With a magnifier, I see three contacts only. Probably right, left, and common.

Now, a USB headset would be interesting?!

Then why does the Square credit card processing software come pre-installed? The Square reader plugs into the headphone jack of smartphone and tablets to allow swiping of a credit card and inputting the card information. Square readers would have to use the mic contact to send that info through, wouldn't they?

BTW... I love the fact that Square was pre-loaded, but my Square reader just barelyfits into the inset headphone jack.

The standard Thrive dock offers a distinct line-out jack AFAIK. This may how Toshiba intended people that need this to get it?

It does. I have yet to try a microphone in that jack yet. My bluetooth mic works fine though.

I got my old logitech headset and mic to work. Also, my sharkoon x-tatic XS (PC, Linux, X-box compatible) worked, both headphones and mic. They do require USB to work, but that's as a power supply AFAIK.

Upon further reflection, I think they are "auto switching" a three-prong jack, but I don't have an appropriate headset laying around to try out. But here's an example of what I think is going on with that jack (image credit to Maxim semiconductor):

This is how you can use either a stereo earphone or a mono-headset with microphone in one jack. I would be hard pressed to imagine they could also support stereo line-in, but then again...there are far better devices than an Android tablet for digitizing analog music or sneaking into a live concert for a bootlegging session.

Kind of off this convesation but I have tried to use a USB headset and microphone in the thrive and it doesn't even recognize that something is plugged into it. Is the USB only configured to recognize storage only???
