    Aviation Maps APP

I just finished a 3 day cross-country using the "Aviation Maps" APP and have decided that it works very well. It consists of a database of maps (sectionals, low and hi alt inroute) and charts (instrument approach plates, terminal area charts) and Airport data.

    Some thoughts:

1 The internal GPS works fairly well. While in motion at altitude I had to occasionally place it on the glare shield to get a new position lock.
2 You can download weather (while on the ground) and overlay it with your route.
3 The airport databases show runways and show the angle of your approach to each runway.
4 Waypoints can be easily created and added to your flight plan by touching the screen.
5 Flightplans can easily be created, edited and deleted.
    6 Subscription is about $5/mo
7 Touching an airport symbol on the sectional brings up data on the airport including bearing, distance and time (while inroute)

Still exploring but it looks much better than Naviator.

    Careful w/ these apps.

Small craft recently landed on a road that his GPS told him was a landing strip. It did occur at night, and was not a landing strip although it was near a small airport.

Here is a link for the aviation maps: http://www.avilution.com/

The aviation maps app was recently removed from the android market as Google felt the free app with subscription was a violation of Google policies. You can still get the app directly from the website above. It is a fantastic app, I use it every time I fly my airplane cross country. Like the first poster mentioned the GPS is a bit sensitive at the high altitude/speeds, and I usually have to find a 'sweet spot' where the thrive will maintain GPS connectivity. But, if I do lose connectivity for a moment all I have to do is set it on the glare shield for about 20 seconds and its good to go.

I'm a pilot, and I would never rely on this app. It might be useful for some kind of backup, but flying is a precision exercise.

I think that is a given, hence it says not for official navigation right when you open the map. It's a good backup, gives you great situational awareness. Always always always fly with official material. Whether thats with charts and looking out the window, VORs, NDBs, Loran (yeah right) or GPS. It is nice to have the moving map pictography overlayed on a sectional or ELA though.
