    Mail vs Gmail apps?

I've always used the gmail for my Google accounts, but recently the widget and app stopped updating, and for some reason I can't update it. I'm running one of Oil's magic so that may be the issue.

I was looking at running mail instead does anyone have any insight as to any significant drawbacks to this approach?

    TIA

The last time I used it, the stock mail app worked perfectly well, and allowed more than one email account to be configured in the one app. Another mail app you may wish to try, as has been recommended by many here, is the K9 Mail ... available in the Google Play Store. Works great!

Try clearing cache for the app.
    Settings/application manager /all /Gmail - force stop - clear cache
    Reboot.
