Must be signed in to Amazon app store to use their apps? - WTF

Tried to start playing a game ( a free app of the day) downloaded from Amazon months ago and an error message pops up saying I must be signed in to the Amazon app store to play. First I never signed out of my Amazon account but why would I need to be signed in for a game I've been playing almost every day for months and which is on my Thrive?
I finally did sign in (again)and then was able to play.

I know that the App Store must be installed in order for an app obtained there to work.
It might 'call home' to verify the purchase.
Just like when, with previous versions of the PlayStore it show an update available to an app gotten through the App Store, but, when told to update, it would fail.

We had a thread not too long ago, where we figured it's a daily phone-home to Amazon's DRM servers. I get the same message if I've restored an app via Titanium Backup but haven't yet installed and signed into Amazon's marketplace app. It probably doesn't happen for purely free apps, but for a free-that-day app they want to make sure you've logged into the Amazon account.

Amazon probably gives the same info (e-mail, ZIP code and so on) to app makers that Google does, but I find Google's updating to be a little more seamless, so I use the Play Store to get purely free apps. This reminds me, I haven't tried Bing's marketplace yet.

Don't some games call home to add high scores, etc.?

IDK. Not much of a gamer. But it makes sense, especially if you agree to being added to a leader board

Microsoft has TV ads touting Bing's greater privacy, since they don't provide e-mail addresses or other info to the app developers. OK, I'm going to try it right now and report later.

Edit: I thought they were starting an app store of their own, but all I can find is their regular site with "Other" for Android stuff. I guess their "switch" is about moving over to a Windows device and using Bing for a service.

A couple of things at play. Amazon's paid apps (even if gotten as a free offer) require Amazon App Store installed and logged in to operate. Periodically the Amazon App Store App will phone home to validate login & paid apps.
Found my signature file, but it appears to be empty...
