None of us to my knowledge owns one of these.
If Toshiba's pattern is consistent, I'd say chances of doing anything other than possibly rooting are slim to none.
If you want a 'hacking friendly' tablet, you might want to return it and look elsewhere....

While we may never see root for this device it's not totally a dud. It's got a great display, sound and speed. The USA owners just got a JB 4.3 update. With a SDXC class card, 3rd party apps can write to external storage. With Helium one can backup apps and data. Adblock Plus provided as blocking without root. Those are my core rooting needs. Of course one needs to rely on Toshiba for ROM updates and this is the biggest drawback for flash-addicts.
Found my signature file, but it appears to be empty...

Well the good news is I probably can root it, bad news is there's never going to be a custom recovery, kernel or ROM for it anyways.

I think by popular he's referring to development, it'll never be mainstream popular as long as Toshiba goes out of their way to lock their stuff down. Users wanting a great device and don't care about modifying it at all, yes it'll be popular, but there are just as good or better devices that are open if you choose it. The new price drop is a sign of toshiba sales suffering from their bad tablet reputation, it sure isn't the device itself.

I'd say they'd be great for business due to their security, but that's not right either, it has holes and root can be attained, just no custom recovery/roms/kernels.

    I doubt it.
Toshiba's tablet reputation among hobbyists is about nil, and they don't advertise enough to interest the general public.
