Wifi Dell laser printer for $30 @ Staples, and today a 25% off coupon on many things

Dell 1160w Wireless Mono Laser Printer | Staples®

I bought one yesterday. Thirty bucks is a good price for 1500 cleanly printed pages, and this has wifi, with an app to print from Android devices. Then I saw a coupon in my inbox this morning for 25% off a single item, excluding PCs/laptops/tablets but NOT printers. I returned the printer and immediately bought it back with the coupon for $22.49.

We already have a Brother laser printer that I got for $50 five years ago. It's been a solid workhorse, but it's wired, and the toner is going to run out sometime. After I test the Dell, it'll be my occasional-use printer in the bedroom.

    Panda,
We must have come from the same mold as this is something I would have done.
Bought a refurbished HP 17" Pavillion Entertainment I-5 Laptop from Sam's Club but they wouldn't offer an extended warranty so after 3 days I took it back and asked to speak to the Manager.

He had a tough time finding it and someone put a broken tag put on it. Told him it worked fine for me the day before and a warranty was declined. Told him I was interested if they honored the warranty and he asked me if I would take it for $250 with a 3 year warranty included. So here it is 3 years later and laptop is running smooth as silk.

He said there was one of his clerk would have his buddy buy a laptop, take it home then return it. The store then would have to put a Return to Stock/Refurbished label on it and store had to reduce its price and another of his buddies would come in and buy it for a huge discount.

The manager, who I see often, said the clerk had a scam working and that I helped him find and fire the dishonest clerk. We both came out winner's.

Wow, maybe I'm too scrupulous a person, but that kind of scam is beyond my imagination!

Since the printer is still on sale (and out of stock today at the local store), Staples gave me no trouble. The coupon says it doesn't apply to past purchases, but the clerk already knew what to do. If they didn't honor the coupon, out of principle I'd have returned the printer.

Yeah, I was going to do that, but then I saw that too. In store only.

Oh, duh. I thought that it would come with the first toner cartridges. ha ha... I was expecting a lot for 30 bucks, wasn't I? Well, that makes a bit of difference

Not so bad, though if you'd get 1500 pages before having to buy more. It'd be a long long time before I'd needed to buy more. It would be for use here at Mom's, in addition to my regular printer at home. IDK

Toner for laser printers has become the manufacturers' big profit margin, like cartridges for inkjets. I don't play either game. If we get 1500 pages out of this, that's 1.5 cents per page, and in another 5 years I'll be ready to snag another deal.

One thing about our Brother is that after perhaps 200 pages, it suddenly gave the "toner low" error and wouldn't print at all. There was still plenty left, shown by peeking inside a clear part of the toner cartridge. All I needed to do was put a piece of black electrical tape over it, tricking the sensor. You have to wonder if it's deliberate.

Okay, then, if they say you can get 1500 pages out of whatever comes with it, that's a deal and a half. I'm getting one for sure on Friday if they have any left.

I've had that experience too, panda, with the cartridges still having quite a bit in there. On my printer at home (funny, I can't remember the brand right now :@) if even one color is low or runs out, it won't print at all.
That's a great tip about using tape to fool the sensor. I never thought about that

It was thanks to the great oracle of Google that I found someone's discovery that this Brother laser (perhaps their other models) doesn't detect toner properly, and a little black tape takes care of it. Of course, now I won't know when it's truly low on toner until things come out light, but I can live with that.

This Dell was a little strange to set up. Password was right, the setup program could tell my home network is AES only, but it wouldn't connect either through DHCP or a manual setup. I exited and went through setup again, no problem.
