    Exclamation Install apk problem - install button not working

    Hi

    I am having issues with 3rd party apk installstion.

    Toshiba AT100 with ICS 4.04 not rooted

    I have Settings>Security>Unknown Sources - enabled

    The Problem:

    When attempting to install ANY non-market apk file (eg - from SD Card, USB), the INSTALL button is non-functional. Only the Cancel can
    be pressed.

    What I have tried:-
    Playstore instals work fine
    NO Screen filter or screen brightness apps present
    NO Battery saver apps present
    I have tried just about every installer app on Playstore - same result
    I tried clearing every cache I can get to including low level installer framework
    The problem has affected many different Android devices as you will see if you search for it

    I am not wanting a "Do a factory reset" as an answer, It's up there with Re-Install Windows."
    which I reject as a solution to PC problems unless all else fails. I used to be in tech support so
    I know most all problems can be fixed without a sledge hammer

    My current theory is a buggy market app or a 'drive by' update to an app I have previously installed
    so I am uninstalling apps one by one until I find the culprit. When I do, the developer will be copping
    some heavy flack from me.

    I have not found a satisfactory answer anywhere else obviously, so I'm hoping someone here has a clue.

    Thanks
    tamxir

    How are you trying to install the APK file? Have you tried to copy the APK to the device and then just launch it? It should come up and ask if you want to install it from there.

    Re: Install apk problem - install button not working

    If not already done:

    Settings -> Apps -> All -> Package Installer Clear Cache & Data, Force Stop, reboot. If this doesn't work repeat, but reboot into recovery and wipe the cache partition.

    Still having issues try AppInstaller. Still having issues, there must be a bad system app (frameworks?) that needs clearing and force closed.
    Found my signature file, but it appears to be empty...

    Unhappy

    Thank you responders!

    dalepl

    I have tried installig apk's from USB stick /SD Card via several file manager apps. I also copied apks
    to 'downloads' folder and tried many Playstore installer apps - same result. Cannot launch.

    My conclusion has been that it points to the system installer being inhibited by something or broken.
    I suspect

    mcarver2000

    I do not have an Settings -> Apps -> All option (see att. screenshot)
    app AppInstaller still seems to use the system install process - Install button still not functioning
    I booted into recovery and wiped the cache as you described. No luck with that

    One thing that struck was references on the web to screen overlays as a potential cause. I use TTS extensively d
    due to vision prblems. I recently tried all the screen and clipboard reading apps I could find
    on the market and only kept 'talking clipboard'. One app placed a screen overlay the exact size of the
    system installer dialog but containing text to be spoken. I unistalled it but it still appears for
    example when I long press Description in an app screen in Android market. I'll have to try and track down
    what it was. Perhaps it left behind some crap as a lot of Android apps seem to do after uninstall.

    I'm grasping at straws now but I do appreciate your response which was more detailed than any I have found
    elsewhere on the web mcarver2000. Ill keep trying and report back any results.

    I wish this was PC Windows. I could simply do an sfc /scannow , hack the registry or run a decent
    leftover scanner LOL. I'd root the tablet in the blink of an eye if I didn't have this vision problem.

    Even if you swipe to the left, the 'all' option isn't there?

    Thank you danvee, I found the "All"/ I didn't know you could do that

    I followed mcarver2000's steps again several times but the problem remains.

    This one is a toughie, but you have given me some valuable clues.

    Thanks

    GOTCHA !!!

    It was Talkback.

    I went through Settings->Apps->All and systematically cleared cache and killed suspects then retried an install. Talkback was it.

    As to why? I don't know, but I'll try to recreate the problem before shooting off a choicely worded email to those responsible

    Add this to your knowledgebase.

    Many thanks to all who helped me.

    Regards
    tamxir

    P.S.

    What appears to have caused the issue in the first place is the modification of Talkback's behavior by another TTS app from the Android Market. Even after uninstallation of the other app which I won't name until I can re-create the problem, Talkback retained settings which caused the install malfunction. I will report back once I am sure of my facts.

    Sd a side note, I was mad keen to install the latest nightly build of Android XBMC (Media Center) which is top notch and works great on my Thrive. I'll post a new thread about this in the appropiate forum section. I'vr been waiting to watch live TV on my tablet via wifi from my PC TVSerever setup - VERY COOL!

    Lightbulb Install apk - unknown sources enabled - install buton not working: - How to fix it

    In order to solve this problem correctly I have documented the steps to recreate it and then how fix it.

    OS - Android 4.04
    App responsible - Talkback version 3.1.3 (and possibly earlier versions)
    Toshiba Thrive AT100 but possibly applies to other devices.

    Instructions:

    Settings->Accessibility ON
    Talkback Settings->Developer Settings->Display Speech output CHECKED
    Ensure Settings->Security->Unknown Sources ENABLED

    Switch to Home screen
    Run File Manager - Access USB or SD Card with apk to install
    select apk - Install dialog appears - Install button non functional
    Cancel

    Settings->Accessibility->Talkback
    Settings->Developer Settings->Display Speech output UNCHECKED
    Switch to Home screen

    Run File Manager - Access USB or SD Card with apk to install
    select apk - Install dialog appears - Install button still non functional

    Settings->Apps->All
    Talkback
    Clear Cache
    Clear Data
    No reboot required
    Switch to Home screen

    Run File Manager - Access USB or SD Card with apk to install
    select apk - Install dialog appears - Install button now works!
    Re-enble Settings->Accessibility Talkback if desired

    I had apparently enabled Talkback Display Speech output to see what it did and then disabled it.
    It was much later when I tried to install an apk file that the problem presented itself and the
    solution was in no way obvious.

    I am reporting this issue to Google.

    Case CLOSED

    Regards
    tamxir

    EDIT

    Issue update: Nov 30 2012

    Talkback version 3.2.1 rolled out by Google on Nov 29 2012
    Problem resolved. The above issue with Talkback has been fixed.
    It is recommended for all to update the app from Google Playstore.

    That was quick
    Thank you for your positive comments, devs and mods!
